The Australian star of a new film about the gift of prophecy says she could relate to the movie, called Knowing, because there was a time in her life when she was a true believer. “I used to see a lot of psychics,” she says in a New York hotel room. “I would treat myself every six months to psychics in England and the U.S. and Australia, wherever the work took me. Then one day I realized it is better to cast away those things and try to be present. “The last time I went to one, I realized the whole thing was based on self-fulfilling prophecy,” she continues. “A psychic tells you that you are going to move to New Mexico, and you move there and you have to think, ‘Did I move here because they told me to be here?’ I came to the conclusion that the mystery of not knowing is a sacred thing and a beautiful part of life. “I think the mysteries are the things you have to hold onto because you know everything now. We all know everything that is going on in politics and pop culture,” she says. “I also realized that it [psychics] is basically a form of therapy. You just sit there and talk about yourself: ‘What do you think of me?’ If you are doing that, you should probably see a trained professional rather than some hack.” Rest of interview can be found here. |

Driving around the city, you can see billboards and bus-stop posters with a picture of Rose Byrne in a provocative pose: her spike-heeled foot on Glenn Close’s neck. So you know the 29-year-old Australian actress who stars in FX’s “Damages” is a pretty intense actress. But what she’s longing to do is be funny. “I haven’t done that. I actually think that’s a harder genre in a way,” says the actress who also stars with Nic Cage in the new sci-fi thriller “Knowing,” opening Friday. “I admire comedians very much. We had Darrell Hammond (of “Saturday Night Live”) on ‘Damages’ this season, and I was just in awe of him after watching his Clinton and McCain. I could barely talk to him. SHE may well be one of Hollywood’s brightest young things, with countless movies and a hit TV series, Damages, under her belt, but that hasn’t cured Rose Byrne of shyness. “I’m a pretty timid person, I’m not particularly extroverted,” Byrne says. “As an actor, you’re asked to wear your heart on your sleeve and be so sensitive and to be able to access any kind of emotion, yet you have to have the thickest skin in the world to survive rejection every day. “How do you do that?
